Cormac had to let her go. Just the strength of the emotions that had been attacking him in the past couple of days was reason enough. That hadn’t changed in the two months they’d been apart. And it had been the whole reason he’d gotten himself away from her the first time.

He couldn’t have her relying on him when he was blinded by emotion.

But... “Emily?” he called just before she reached the spare room door.

“Yeah?” She stopped. Didn’t turn around.

“It’s dark outside. Can you at least wait until morning?”

She turned enough to glance his way. Her face was shadowed, but he thought she smiled a little as she nodded. “Of course.”

It wasn’t until after she’d shut her door that he realized they still hadn’t discussed the one thing he needed to have out with her—how his role of father was going to play out.

He thought about knocking on that closed bedroom door. About getting all the tough stuff done at once, so when she went home in the morning, they’d have an understanding of how things were going to work.

He wanted to be at all future doctor appointments, for one. How could he know where and how to step up if he wasn’t even aware of the floor plan?

The blood pressure cuff...he almost knocked on the door to tell her he’d have it sent to her place as soon as it arrived the next day.

He went to bed instead. Turned his back on his own closed door and went to sleep.

And he left a note for her on the table early the next morning, telling her he’d have the cuff sent over, on his way out for an early breakfast meeting with his siblings.

He’d remain focused on what he did do well.

Work.

He was thankful that he had a talent, and a way to use it that required all of him.

Sean, Liam and Cormac had all ordered big breakfasts by the time Eva arrived to their 7 a.m. meeting. Asking for a bowl of oatmeal before she even had her coat off, she apologized for being late.

All of two minutes.

Cormac thought about giving her a hard time anyway. She’d said she needed to toughen up.

But as it occurred to him that her being the youngest, a girl, with three protective older brothers couldn’t be easy, he kept his mouth shut. Why he was suddenly seeing things from her possible perspective he had no idea.

But he had no time to think about it, either, as Sean started in, letting them know that with further follow-up, there’d been absolutely no other sign, no witness, no surveillance camera proof that Humphrey had been on Amsterdam Avenue, or at Columbia the day before.

“A guy doesn’t just vanish into thin air,” Eva announced, sounding frustrated.

“No, but there are a lot of ways to make it appear that he has.” Cormac could come up with any number of them. Most of them unpalatable. For all they knew, Humphrey could be at the bottom of the river.
